Peter Evelyn ... hailed as dynamic leader of the SAJ - contributed The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) is deeply saddened by the recent death of one of our past presidents, Peter Evelyn, in Florida. The Managing Committee and members and staff of the SAJ wish to express our sincere condolences to his family.
Mr. Evelyn was a dynamic leader of the SAJ who served as president (then called chairman) in 1971 and 1972. It was under his leadership that the SAJ's Recruitment Centre was completed in Newport West. Our History of the SAJ notes that this development "marked a brand new day for the port workers. They now had a modern facility which allowed them to change into work clothes, relax in comfort while waiting to be assigned, and a lunch room to provide meals."
The contributions of this outstanding Jamaican extended beyond the local shipping industry as he was a 'founding father' and the first president of the Caribbean Shipping Association.
He was a visionary who helped steer the course of Jamaica's shipping industry toward the goal of making the Port of Kingston the best in the world and to facilitate close cooperation within the regional shipping industry.
