Is Lloyd pursuing his own agenda?
published: Sunday | May 27, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I NOTE with concern the recent comments attributed to Clive Lloyd, the former Test captain of the West Indies team, about his desire and pursuit of Duncan Fletcher to be the next cricket coach of the West Indies team. While I cannot comment on the merits or demerits of Fletcher's credentials to coach the West Indies team, I am more concerned about the manner in which the case is being pursued.

I would have assumed that in seeking to select the next coach for the team, the board would have met, decided what was required in the new coach at this point in time (based on reports and recommendations from the so-called cricket committee), identify those who should be pursued and then enter into preliminary discussions before any public pronouncements.

Instead, I am seeing Lloyd make grand announcements about wanting and in fact pursuing Fletcher to be the next West Indies coach. Is this a board decision and Lloyd is the vehicle to complete the negotiations? Or is Lloyd pursuing his own agenda without any formal decision of the board?

From the public perspective, we are left in the dark. Can the relevant authority speak? When will we learn!

I am, etc.,
