The Editor, Sir:I could not hold my view after reading the Rev. Dick's article in The Gleaner of May 29, entitled 'Benny Hinn and that spirit'. I believe in prophecy, I believe in the olden prophets and prophetesses.
I also believe that just as it was in the Before Christ (B.C.) era wherein there were false prophets, there were also true prophets. The false prophets will have to use the Bible and God's name to do their work. And Rev. Devon Dick's article is suggesting to us that we should test the spirit, because not every spirit is of the Lord.
There was a certain American prophet and healer who came to Jamaica to prophesy and heal. My wife went one night, I did not. She was telling me what took place on that night: people threw away their wheelchairs and walking sticks. To my surprise, all of them had to buy new walking sticks and new wheelchairs within two days. When I enquired from members of the team, I was told that their faith was not strong enough.
An interesting story is recorded in 2 King 5: 1-27. The story of Naaman who was the commander of the army of the King of Syria. And he was grandson of Benjamin, but he was a leper. He was told about Elisha the prophet. He went to see the prophet who did not come out to speak with him, but sent his servant to go and tell him to dip in the Jordan River seven times. Naaman was furious, expecting Elisha to come and parade around him and touch him. When Naaman was healed, he went back to Elisha and offered him riches, but the true man of God took nothing.
I am afraid of some of these so-called prophets and healers. Some of them set up themselves to exploit people; even the obeahman uses the Lord's name. I am in agreement with you, Rev. Dick; not every one thatsays "Lord, Lord" shall enter. Jesus himself had said so.
I am, etc.,
