Honouring a PM and some birthdays
published: Friday | June 1, 2007

'Nobody leave, nobody go', Sheilagh Jardim (left) seems to be saying to her friend Martine Fontaine as they partied the night away at Busha Clarke's crab party at Paradise Park in Savanna-la-Mar on Saturday. - Photo by Janet Silvera

My daahlings, he could be easily the most anointed former Prime Minister Jamaica has ever seen. The accolades, awards, commendations and international citations have been pouring in for P.J. Patterson since his retirement, and luvs how!

My dears, we are talking an international charter here, and not just the hackneyed applause and or platitudes of his grateful party for winning elections. P.J. Patterson has become the international gadabout as he jets from one assignment to the other, pausing in between to collect an award here, another there, and a few more, over there.

Special awards

Dovecakes, the latest organisation to honour the former Prime Minister is the Caribbean American Heritage Celebration in Northern California. In conjunction with NBA player Adonal Foyle's Kerosene Lamp Foundation, the group will host a cocktail reception on Sunday, June 10. Mr. Patterson will not only be the keynote speaker, but will also be the recipient of a special award.

Special award swill also be presented to United States Congresswoman Barbara Lee, and a tribute to the late Shirley Chisholm.

My daahlings, the affair will be held at the Waterfront Plaza Hotel on Washington Street in Oakland.

According to one of Jamaica's leading residents in the community, the 'first lady of the runway and high fashion', the indomitable Audrey Burgess-Barakatt, the event promises to be a social humdinger of the intimate and fabulous order, with the cachet and flavour of an international, national and Caribbean flavour.

And speaking of flavour, if y'all missed Busha Clarke's annual crab fest over there at his Paradise Acres estate in Savanna-la- Mar, then, daahlings, the buzz is y'all missed one fabulous outing, and an even more fabulous crab feast!

Dears, the story is it rained all day and into the evening as well, but the elements were no match for the determined guests who jetted in from all over the globe for the annual shindig, not to mention the haute society who motored in from all over the island.

On Monday night, the king was chez Mario Machado and his Mac's Chop's House - that fab restaurant over there in the heart of New Kingston - as this was the preferred dining spot for the Honourable Edward Seaga and wife Carla, who were spotted in the fab establishment sharing a cozy birthday outing.

Also out at Mac's Chop's House were members of the Watson family as Winston Watson, his fabulous wife Cecile and their fabulous daughter Courtney-Raye were all out treating their son and brother Neil, home from college for the holidays and to celebrate his birthday. The Watsons' son shares his May 28 birthday with the Opposition Leader; and so the two birthday boys took time out from their respective dinner parties to exchange birthday wishes.

Luvs, it made for one lovely interlude, as indeed, it was that kind of an outing - charmingly lovely, and then some!

Birthday wishes

And belated birthday wishes and greetings to the lovely and fab radio and television personality, actress and elocutionist Fae Ellington, who celebrated her birthday on May 28.

Best wishes also to the fab Sandra Samuels who celebrated her special day yesterday.

Now, on Sunday, the fab journeyed from all over to celebrate with retired hotelier and gourmet Michael Bryne, as the raconteur and bon vivant was celebrating his 70th birthday. This he did with a bang, my dears, at his country club residence near Ocho Rios, St. Ann. And, my dears, the inclement weather did not affect attendance one bit!

And so it was, party-fabulous and then some asguests held no punches in the barbs and toasts they threw at the birthday boy over premium libations and a marvellous fare.

Happy returns y'all, and here's to the good life, punctuated by champagne toasts and beluga treats!

Destination Jamaica

Dr. the Rev. Benjamin Patterson popped into the island from his New York home last weekend. And Ocho Rios is readying itself for the mid-July wedding of Dr. Gary Oates and his fiancée.

Meanwhile, destination Jamaica continues to be the island of choice for the rich and fabulous, My dears American television star, the fabulous Allison Sweeney, known as the sometimes troubled vixen 'Sammy' on the soap Days of Our Lives, is here filming the latest episode of her new hit series The Biggest Loser at the fabulous Grande Lido Negril.

On other matters, the word is the oh-so-chic Velisa's Restaurant, over there on Devon Road, st. Andrew, is all set to close its doors this weekend, in its bid to relocate to a bigger and more parking and customer-friendly locale.

My dears, wait for the relocation announcement as the buzz is, with last night seeing a Full Blue Moon in the sky, to close down operations, it was all about the Velisa's Full Blue Moon shindig, last night. More anon!

And we invoke the very best of wishes and speediest of recoveries for our dear friend and style grand dame Marilyn Bennett at this her hour of incapacitation.
