
PickersgillTransport and Works Minister Robert Pickersgill says work on the Norman Manley International Airport in Jamaica is on target with the terminal arrivals concourse set to be completed this year.
Mr. Pickersgill made the disclosure during his opening presentation in the 2006/2007 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
He said that in another two weeks, the Airports Authority of Jamaica - which is spearheading the work - would take over the check-in hall, which will then be made operational within a few months.
New transportation hall
Mr. Pickersgill said the rehabilitation and upgrading would also include a new transportation hall, which will house car-rental companies and taxi dispatching facilities. He said this facility would be ready for service by July.
The remainder of the departure building will be completed and operational before the start of the 2007/08 winter tourist season.
Mr. Pickersgill said that phase two of the rehabilitation of the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay would be completed by July, 2008.
Other works
The other works in this phase include the construction of a new domestic terminal which will be incorporated into the main building and the redevelopment and expansion of the airport roadways.
Additional check-in facilities and lobby areas, expanded inbound and outbound immigration, security checkpoints and new outbound baggage security and delivery systems will also be put in place.
Mr. Pickersgill said Common user terminal equipment and a range of customer-service features, such as airline first-class lounges, are also being addressed.
