Batting for peace: a recurring decimal
published: Saturday | June 2, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

As appeared on the front page of The Gleaner 22/5/07 - 'Leaders bat for peace'. This is to me a recurring decimal.

The statements announced by both political leaders are highly commendable, the embracing denotes a symbol of peace for the upcoming general election, but are the tongues bridled against unsavoury remarks during the campaigning?

Way back, this gesture was always an election gimmick by both parties, to issue warning slips to their supporters to avoid encounters in order to have a peaceful election, but as I can recall, it was never adhered to. I believe if this appeal should ever be a reality, history will be recorded.

I am also requesting the leaders to persuade the print and electronic media, also the talk show hosts, to do their part in bringing about sanity to the many callers.

Leader, it is my prayer that your words be your bond, now and hereafter.

I am, etc.,
