Jamaican Police Commisssioner, party heads to ensure peaceful elections
published: Saturday | June 2, 2007

Western Bureau:

In preparation for the impending general election, Jamaican Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas has proposed to meet with the top brass of the major political parties to ensure that the election will be peaceful.

"I will be discussing a number of issues, including post-election activities and utterances, and the position of the constabulary as it pertains to the conduct of peaceful elections," Commissioner Thomas told rank-and-file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) at the Starfish Hotel in Trelawny on Thursday. He was addressing the annual meeting of the Jamaica Police Federation.

Commissioner Thomas was among several persons who earlier this year stressed that the upcoming election will be "bloody", based on intelligence reports received. He did not hesitate on Thursday to sternly warn the men and women under his command to remain neutral.

He said a contingency plan is being developed by the JCF to deal with pre and post election concerns.
