Former national volleyball player turned author, Collin Henry, will help open the third annual Business House Volleyball League (BHVL) tomorrow at the University of the West Indies gymnasium. The BHVL is being sponsored for the first time by Reggae Jammin'.

Henry, who represented Jamaica in the 1990s and played for local club Venus, will be the guest speaker at the opening ceremony which starts at 3:00 p.m.

An exhibition match between UWI Club and Venus Club at 11:00 a.m., and an invitational three-a-side match at noon. between past and current players of Venus, in which Henry will play, will precede the opening ceremony.

First match

The first league match between former champion Bank of Jamaica and National Water Commission will be at 1:00 p.m., while defending champions Jamaica Urban Transit Company face debutantes The Gleaner at 3:45 p.m.

Henry's instructional book on volleyball, which is co-authored by Judy Corcoran, "Playing With your Head at An teaches the rudiments of the game and shows how not-so-tall players can excel at the game. Henry, 37, is a former student of St. Jago High and now lives in New York where he plays for two-time national champions, US Creole Volleyball Club.

The BHVL will last over five weeks from June 3 to July 1, and is a mixed league. Each team must have at least two females on the court at all times.

"Volleyball has a strong and passionate following, but what we're doing is introducing the sport to new persons, particularly adults," said Paula-Anne Porter Jones, director of CNIS Sports, organisers of the league. "A competition like this will also help to develop better camaraderie between co-workers and foster strong working relationships."
