  • 'Little People Cricket' in St Elizabeth

HUNDREDS OF basic school children, supported by their parents and teachers, enjoyed the annual St. Elizabeth 'Little People Cricket' tournament staged at the Alpart Sports Club recently.

The tournament, organised by the St. Elizabeth Early Childhood Zone 31, attracted more than 50 schools to what the teachers described as "a nursery for developing an interest in the at an early age".

The three-over games were played on mini-pitches laid out on Alpart's cricket field and supervised by teachers acting as umpires and scorers. Under-arm bowling, tennis balls and hand-made bats produced entertaining and exciting cricket moments with some lofty sixes over the 15-yard boundaries indicating of the latent talent in St. Elizabeth.

Public relations manager at Alpart, Lance Neita, said the Alpart Trophy, which was won by the New Building Basic School this year, will probably be retired next year in exchange for prizes and tokens for all the participants, in order to discourage too much competition in the tournament.

Neita also said: "Little Cricket has significance for a revival of deeper interest in the game in Jamaica as it encourages a love and interest from an early age, and attracts wide community support."
