Bolt ... on track for big season. - FileJAMAICA'S WORLD Junior record holder, Usain Bolt, is the third fastest man over the half-lap distance this season.
In becoming the third man to run under 20 seconds this season, the Jamaican 2002 World Junior champion ran an impressive 19.96 seconds to win the 200m event at the Hampton International Games in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad last weekend.
It was with this performance, that 'Lightning' Bolt, as he is called, was voted The Gleaner Top Performer of the Week.
In control
According to reports, as he emerged from the bend, the 20-year-old Jamaican was in charge and remained in control in the straight, leaving Trinidad and Tobago track star Darrel Brown and Dominica's Chris Lloyd to battle for the runners-up spot. Brown was second in 20.51 and Lloyd, who clocked 20.55, took third.
Bolt, who made the finals of the 200m at the World Championships in Helsinki two summers ago, said he is on track to do well at this year's championships.
Pleased with time
"There are a few little things to work on but I am on target," Bolt said.
He also said he was pleased with the time, seeing it was his first half-lap run of the year.
"Yes, 19.96, I am happy with that time because it's my first (200m) race of the season. It was a pretty easy race. No pressure," he said.
Only Americans Walter Dix (19.69), the sixth fastest on the all-time performance list, and Wallace Spearmon (19.91) have gone fastest than Bolt this season.
