St James man gets 13 years
published: Monday | June 4, 2007

Ms. Justice Paulette Williams has sentenced Santino Porter, 24, shopkeeper, of Great Pond, St. James, to 13 years' imprisonment.

Porter pleaded guilty in the Home Circuit to manslaughter arising from the fatal shooting of Mark Angus at a dance at Mount Rosser, St. Catherine, on May 4, 2003.

The facts of the case as outlined by Dahlia Findlay, Crown Counsel, were that the men had a at the dance; Angus pushed Porter in the face and Porter used an illegal gun to shoot him.

Attorney-at-law Maria Gayle, who represented Porter, pleaded with the judge to be lenient with Porter when passing sentence. She said Porter, who was very close to his mother who died in 1999, lost his temper and pulled the trigger when Angus made comments as to what Porter should do to his mother.

The judge said she took into account all that had been said on Porter's behalf, but she had no choice but to send him to prison.
