A game-high 65 goals from 67 attempts from the lanky Romelda Aiken carried defending champs Jamalco to a 66-61 victory over arch-rivals Waulgrovians in the decisive third game in the Berger Paints SuperLeague netball final, to cop the series 2-1 at the National Arena yesterday.
Waulgrovians' Carla Williams scored 41 goals from 44 attempts and Simone Forbes, who had an excellent game, a perfect 20 goals from 20 attempts.
"It was a difficult game because Waulgrovians won the second game and this built their confidence for game three. We were down by 10 goals and I told them that they weren't playing the game we played all season, and all we need to do is to defend and take that ball and score some goals, and that's what they did," said Winston Nevers, Jamalco's coach.
Nail-biting victory
Jamalco won game one Thursday 47-45, then Waulgrovians tied the series 1-1 with a nail-biting 58-57 victory in game two on Saturday.
Inn game three, a spirited Waulgrovians could not hold on after leading for three quarters (16-11, 31-25, 47-45).
Waulgrovians were up at one point but by 10 points (39-29), but the Clarendon-based Jamalco finished the third quarter on an 11-3 run to be down by two points (47-45).
The fourth quarter saw Jamalco dominating with 21 points to Waulgrovians' 14, and they closed out the game with a 6-1 run.
This was Jamalco's fifth straight lien on the title.
For losing coach, Patrick Brissett, it was a bitter pill to swallow.
"Carelessness, we just got too careless. We led and we did what we were supposed to do, then we just got careless (with the ball)," a disappointed Brissett disclosed.
