The Editor, Sir:
Let me add my two cents to the carnage that's taking place all around the country with the reckless driving of the so-called shotters/minibus driversin and around the Corporate Area.
There seems to be no law to control these drivers who drive all over the place, overtake at will and show scant regard for traffic laws. The big question from this law-abiding taxpayer is: Where are the police?
Just go out to Constant Spring Road from 7:00-9:00 any workday morning and you will see what I mean. It's the kamikaze-type driving, overtaking, making one-way streets into dual carriageways - it's crazy. Where are the police?
More prudent distribution
I do agree that we cannot put a cop on every street corner but more prudent distribution of police resources should be made by the area supervisor or the traffic boss of the Corporate Area.
Go along Eastwood Park Road about half mile from the new bus terminal and you will see a team of special constables pulling people over, yet you go along Constant Spring Road without seeing a police car or policeman.
Where are the guys riding all those expensive motorcycles? Joyriding? At 4:00 p.m., all civil servants - yes, they all think they are civil servants - lock shop and go home and you can't find one policeman on the streets doing any type of traffic work and all hell breaks loose on the road.
Random testing
I once suggested that the police conduct a literary test on all PPV drivers randomly because the majority of them cannot read. So how they get their general driver's licence is cause for concern and it's time Minister Robert Pickersgill do something about this licence buying that is going on all around the country.
Commissioner Thomas, you are doing a fine job with what you have; but the people you have need to be more proactive, especially the officer corps. Nuff said.
I am, etc.,
