The Editor, Sir:
Governor-Generals are normally known to be people persons.
They are able to unify their nation in times of need, mobilise the masses during tough times, spur individuals to volunteer, excite children about education and stimulate second-rate national teams toward winning cham-pionships.
Not very bright, they tend to adhere to official protocols and read from prepared texts.
As part of the office, they live in smartly furnished mega mansions and move around in chauffeur-driven cars. They tend to be elegantly dressed and have the social grace to accommodate people from various backgrounds.
While the current Governor-General does not fit that mould, the truth is - no disrespect intended - the Prime Minister does. She is not the sharpest pencil in the box. However, Mrs. Simpson Miller possesses all that's lacking in the governor-generalship.
She dresses very well, knows how to excite the masses and has the ability, like none other before her, to truly unite Jamaica.
I would suggest that Prime Minister Bruce Golding's first order of the day should be to change the constitution and have parliament elect to a seven-year term, as Jamaica's first female Governor-General, Portia Simpson Miller.
Jamaica would have the best of both worlds - strong, effective, government leadership, in the case of Bruce Golding as Prime Minister, and Jamaica's own 'Queen', Portia Simpson Miller.
I am, etc.,
