JAMAICA'S REGGAE Boyz continued to struggle to make any impression under new technical director Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic as they went down 1-0 to Chile at the National Stadium last night.
Despite several opportunities for the hosts to seize the initiative early it was the Chileans who took the lead through Juan Gonzalo Lorca in the 20th minute.
Seconds after seeing a shot roll into the side of the net from 12 yards out by midfielder Lovel Palmer, the Chileans hurriedly pushed themselves into the Jamaican 18-yard area.
With his backline all at sea, Jamaica custodian Richard McCallum was forced to leave his line, charging to his right and rushing to the feet of the Chilean in possession, Jorge Valdiva.
The Jamaicans seemed to freeze as Valdiva dived over the onrushing player, perhaps thinking a penalty was to be awarded, giving Lorca just enough time to fire into a virtually empty net, albeit from a tough angle.
Despite facing an early deficit, the Reggae Boyz continued to see opportunities to score come thick and fast.
In the 25th minute, Ricardo Fuller found himself free on goal after being played into the area by Fabian Davis. Fuller beat Chilean 'keeper Claudio Bravo to the ball but saw his shot cleared away from a tough angle.
Fuller's striker partner, Luton Shelton, was just unlucky five minutes later as he saw his spectacular effort which was chested and then blasted to goal from the edge of the 18-yard area, come crashing back of the bar.
In the second half, substitute Fabian Taylor looked sure to pull Jamaica level but nodded his 53rd-minute effort, set up by a Demar Phillips' square, straight to Chile custodian Bravo.
