Three Jamaican winners on final day of champs

NATIONAL CHAMPION Ricardo Chambers and former Jamaica junior representatives Kerron Stewart of Auburn and Isa Phillips of Louisiana State University (LSU) were winners on yesterday's final day of the 2007 NCAA National Championships at the Sacramento State University Stadium in California.

Chambers, the fourth fastest person this season, won the men's 400m for Florida State in 44.66 seconds, ahead of Lionel Larry of Southern California (44.68).

Stewart, a member of Jamaica's 4x100m gold medal winning team at the 2002 World Junior Championships, won the 200m event in a career-best equalling 22.42 seconds.

Texas A&M's Simone Facey, who finished sixth in the 100m (11.41), was second in yesterday's 200m behind Stewart in 22.64, while Houston's Ebonie Floyd was third in 22.65.

Samantha Henry of LSU was ninth in 25.58.

Personal best

Meanwhile, Phillips, formerly of St. Andrew Technical High School, won the men's 400m hurdles in a personal best 48.51 seconds.

Brandon Johnson of University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) was second in 49.02.

Nickiesha Wilson of LSU finished second in the women's 400m hurdles in 55.68, behind Nicole Leach of UCLA (54.32).

Shaun Smith of Oral Roberts (1:48.09) was sixth in the men's 800m, won by Andrew Ellerton of Michigan (1:47.48).

On Friday, Tracey-Ann Rowe finished third in the women's 100m in 11.30. Sherry Fletcher of LSU won in 11.20.

Wilson was also a third-place finisher, this in the women's 100m hurdles in a personal best 12.93. Tiffany Ofili of Michigan won in 12.80.
