Beauty and politicsIn reference to news story "P.J. backs Lisa" (June 7) I would like to ask former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson is what has beauty to do with political experience? Why should beauty replace democracy? In addition, why should Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller be exempted from following the democratic process?
Before Prime Minister Portia Miller made her endorsement, she did not consult with the executive of the constituency. Maybe she was inspired by God not to consult her executives. Or maybe this is "woman time now." However, come election time, the people will decide what time it is. That is all that matters.

Gully Gov't?The Government's decision to put the National Works Agency in charge of the North Gully is a demonstration of muddled thinking. It also goes to show that what goes round comes around; for it is now possible that the NWA will be given responsibility for all troublesome gullies and that Central Government may be on a path that by-passes Local Government even in such parochial matters as keeping gullies clean.
The present Prime Minister may consider it a strategic move to take an interest in the North Gully. However, it is intriguing to note that 60 years ago when the JLP took an interest in gullies and introduced the master drainage programme for Kingston and St. Andrew, the PNP dubbed the Bustamante administration 'Gully Government'. What are we to say now?

DevelopmentAsk any politician if Maimi looks like any town/city in Jamaica. Ask them if they would like any city in Jamaica to look like development is taking place, like what's taking place in any part of of the world.
Their answer would be YES. Then ask them why not develop Jamaica rather than refurbish it. That is bankrupt thinking and not that of persons who have travelled the world and seen what development is. These current leaders are too concerned with the 'Band-Aid' fix than allowing Jamaica to blossom.

Nuclear reactorA recent report disclosed that utility officials restarted a long dormant nuclear reactor in Alabama, U.S.A. Testing is now being carried out preparatory to having electricity flowing on transmission lines.
Perhaps Jamaica should consider the feasibility of installing a nuclear reactor, with the necessary international safeguards and approvals, in order to provide the electricity needs of Jamaica, through the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited. The oil saved from this project will then become the buffer stock for the transportation and other oil using activities.
