Of men and fathers
published: Monday | June 11, 2007

Every time a man demonstrates failure to live up to society's expectations, we hear that the problem stems from the marginalisation of that gender. Happily, many men do shoulder their responsibilities, and Flair found four of them. For our Father's Day edition, we selected Tariq Nembhard, Nigel Jones, Mikael Phillips and Steven Golding as Flair's guest editors. They enjoy careers in business, politics and communication.

This quartet of personalities has a solid family background, are well educated, have excellent work ethics, are blessed with great looks and, in two instances, have already embraced the realities of fatherhood. They are by no means perfect - all have grappled with personal relationship issues - but they recognise that mistakes are useful learning tools and have the resilience to bounce back and move on.

Tariq Nembhard came to prominence last year when he walked away with Flair's 'Most Eligible Bachelor' title. He has the kind of face that would melt the ice in the most frigid of hearts. Tariq has faced challenges with his dad but there is a lot of love between them.

Nigel Jones is lucky to have the kind of father whom every child dreams of. Now a father himself, this busy attorney is enjoying every minute of the role and looking forward to passing on some of his father's good lessons.

Steven Golding may still be mommy's 'baby' but he is every bit a man on a mission to change some of the negative stereotypes in males. He provides some valuable insights into what it means to have a man in the limelight (Opposition Leader Bruce Golding) as his number one role model.

Mikael Phillips's dimples get you where it matters when he smiles, but this young politician is more than just a handsome face. A father to two young daughters, he would not trade places with anyone in their lives, and though faced with relationship challenges, he has a great dad (Security Minister Peter Phillips) who leads him by example.

The Flair team takes pleasure in sharing the views of these brilliant men on relationships, health, romance, diet and exercise, money matters and, most important - their fathers.

Happy Father's Day!
