What about Assamba?
published: Monday | June 11, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Most Jamaicans must have asked themselves the question 'what does Lisa Hanna have that Aloun Assamba does not?' What was very confusing last week was the re-entry into public commentary of former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson. While he was Prime Minister there were several issues of national importance including roadblocks that gridlocked the country that the 'sage' P.J. never commented about on radio talk shows. But for Lisa Hanna he breaks his silence.

Then there is what I consider the implicit comments about Aloun Assamba that are being made by the entire PNP including P.J. Patterson, her former boss. When Mrs. Assamba faced the same demonstrators and demonstrations and opposition from amongst the PNP within her constituency, there was no comment by Prime Minister Simpson Miller or P.J. Patterson, there was no high level team of persons to pacify the situation as seen in the case of Lisa Hanna. In fact, the opposite happened; Paul Burke commented in a manner that appeared as if he accepted theopinions of the people of South East St. Ann then - why is he so adamant that those opinions must be ignored now?

Most Jamaicans have a very positive opinion of Aloun Assamba and this writer sends her his love and compassion, as it seems there is none such forthcoming from her PNP. Something smells rotten with the new development in that constituency and the ruling PNP and all the beautiful roses and former Miss World smiles won't gloss over this one. As a voter, this matter, more than Highway 2000, will play a role in how I vote!

I am, etc.,
