'If we can bat for two sessions we'll win'
published: Monday | June 11, 2007

GANGA

MANCHESTER, England (CMC):

Captain Daren Ganga and key batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul believe West Indies can go all the way and win the third Test against England today at Old Trafford.

Ganga and Chanderpaul both expressed optimism, after West Indies, chasing 455 to win, reached 301 for five when stumps were drawn on the penultimate day yesterday.

"The game would be over probably in two sessions," Ganga told reporters afterwards. "If we can bat for two sessions I am sure we will win the Test match.

"It will break the record for the highest total chased to win a Test match and we've got a very good chance. It all boils down to the first hour on Monday, laying the foundation with Shiv and Denesh.

"If they can carry us to lunch, we are in with a big shout of winning this Test match. The guys have played hard and played well led by Shiv."

Consistent batting down the order led by Chanderpaul gave West Indies a very faint whiff of an unlikely victory.

Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 81 and eyeing his 15th Test hundred and he has so far added 52 - unbroken - for the sixth wicket with Ramdin, who is not out on 26.

"We have batted pretty well," Chanderpaul said. "Devon (Smith) and Runako (Morton) set it up for us and (Dwayne) Bravo came in and played a good innings.

"(Denesh) Ramdin is there with me and hopefully we can take it further and probably come out with a win in this game.

"We were looking for partnerships and to take it session by session and that was how we basically approached it.

"We will go out and continue doing the same thing on Monday and look to bat out the first two sessions. If we do that we will be close to winning the game."

West Indies hold the world record of 418 for the highest fourth innings winning total in a Test against Australia four years ago at St. John's.
