Student escapes kidnap attempt in Hanover
published: Tuesday | June 12, 2007

WESTERN BUREAU-

A 16-year-old girl sustained minor injuries yesterday when she reportedly jumped from amoving motor car at Ramble, Hanover in an attempt to evade the driver who tried to kidnap her.

"She was travelling to school in the car when she asked for a stop," a policeman at the Ramble Police Station told The Gleaner. "The driver refused saying that he was going to Montego Bay, and the child jumped from the vehicle."

Taxi driver implicated

He added: "Persons who were standing nearby managed to give us the registration number on the Toyota Corolla, which had on public passenger vehicle (PPV) plates."

Investigators were yesterday searching to locate and identify the taxi operator implicated in the incident which occurred about 9:00 a.m.

Assistance from residents

Up to yesterday evening, there was no information to suggest the child was familiar with the driver.

Reports are that the grade nine student boarded the vehicle some four miles away in Haddo, Westmoreland. It is said that she asked for a stop on reaching her school gate.

The driver reportedly accelerated and the girl jumped from the vehicle, sustained several injuries to her forehead, hands, and legs. Residents assisted her to the police station.
