The Editor, Sir:
One can understand the need for a political party to make all efforts as possible to win in an election year. The move to initiate free health care at most of the public hospitals in Jamaica is one of such strategies, I believe, that the ruling party is implementing to maintain power in the country.
The plan can be seen as a stellar one as it will relieve many of those who suffer due to the inability to afford the high cost of health. However, one needs to look at the importance of developing this Third World country; increasing 'handouts' within the country will not lead to the development of this nation.
There are many hospitals that are currently without proper infrastructure, equipment, inadequate staff and are constantly overcrowded, resulting in long waits. This, I believe should be the main concern of the Government at this time and not providing free health care to less than half of the population.
We, as a nation should be proud to call the current health care that we have a good one of high standards. This must take priority over providing free health care.
I am , etc.,
