Air Jamaica's aircraft
published: Tuesday | June 12, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

With the fleet restructuring under way at Air Jamaica, one can only hope they get it right this time. The lease on the six Boeing 757s (which should be 200 series)is a step in the right direction for starters. Air Jamaica has for too long operated the wrong aircraft type on certain routes which often lead to empty flights.

It is good to see the A320s remain as many airlines who previously operated 737-300s opt for the A319/A32X family of aircraft or go for the 737NG due to fuel efficiency, another good move on the part of Air Jamaica. However, the London route could have been saved if Air Jamaica had operated a Boeing 757-300 on that route which has ETOPS certification for such a trip. This aircraft could have operated the Toronto or New York route when not being used on the London route.

That route could have been scaled back to three flights per week if management did their homework. The only other option would have been an A330-200 which is still a favourite transatlantic aircraft for many carriers due to efficiency which is superior to the A340-300.

The management of the lovebird has coughed up many hairballs in recent weeks with their handling of the sale of the London route. I hope that with the fleet restructuring under way, they will take a long hard look at where the A320s and 757s should be strategically deployed, or they might find themselves coughing up the whole cat.

I am, etc.,
