Portmore resident on gun charge
published: Friday | June 15, 2007

A resident of Portmore, St. Catherine, has been detained by the Special Gun Unit, following the seizure of two high-powered weapons, that were intercepted at a warehouse in Kingston yesterday.

Reports are that the guns, an AK-47 rifle and a shotgun, were disassembled and found concealed among food items packed in a barrel, shipped from New York, United States.

According to the Customs Department, the guns were found during a routine examination and were later handed over to the police, who have since sought the assistance of their overseas counterparts to assist with the investigation.

The Gleaner has learnt that the guns were destined for a Kingston community. They were seized less than 42 hours after the Special Gun Unit got its official mandate from National Security Minister Dr. Peter Phillips, to search for illegal guns hidden across communities islandwide.
