UK diaspora lobby group to be formed
published: Friday | June 15, 2007

The creation of a United Kingdom (U.K.) diaspora lobby group will be one of the pressing issues to be discussed at the second national conference of the Jamaican Diaspora U.K. set for Diaspora Day, tomorrow.

The event, which will take place at West Bromwich, West Midlands, in the U.K., will also be used to officially launch the Jamaica Diaspora Youth Group.

According to a release from the Jamaica Information Service, Paulette Simpson, Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board representative, said the time was right to bring together interested persons to discuss campaigning and lobbying on issues affecting Jamaicans both in the U.K. and Jamaica.

"Over the last few years, we have worked hard to put in place a structure for the organisation and to encourage the participation of the wider Jamaican community in the diaspora movement,"she said. "Now we want to make an even bigger impact on the issues that affect the lives of Jamaicans here in the U.K.."

The Jamaican Diaspora U.K., which was formed in 2004, has been working across all regions in the U.K.

The conference is seeking to strengthen the involvement of Jamaicans in the diaspora movement and to identifyand discuss key issues affecting the Jamaican community in the U.K. It is also expected to identify key areas in which the diaspora can impact on national development in Jamaica.

Participants will also be able to take part in a number of workshops dealing with issues, such as entrepreneurship; immigration lobbying for Jamaica; education and culture, and the role of the Church.

The first Jamaican Diaspora U.K. Conference was held last April in the West Midland, with participation from more than 800 Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica.
