The Editor, Sir:It is with alarm and disgust that I read an article earlier this week on the appalling destruction of Refuge Cay. Refuge Cay and its mangroves represent the habitat for numerous species of birds, including the endangered Brown Pelican, and other forms of life. Its degradation is a national scandal.
We continue to savage the bio-diversity of this now only partially beautiful land. NEPA sleeps, the NWA is oblivious and NSWMA apparently does not care. Do these entities realise that they are all potentially in breach of the duty imposed on them by the statutes under which they have been set up?
Our patrimony is not merely financial. This generation has been given a sacred trust to maintain and, if possible, to improve the environmental integrity of our country. In breaching this trust, we are depriving its beneficiaries of the bounty of our legacies.
We need to act now. Who will join this cause?
I am, etc.,
