Title on the line in St Elizabeth
published: Saturday | June 16, 2007

SANTA CRUZ:

Last Sunday's postponed St. Elizabeth Wray and Nephew Major League final between Holland Police Youth Club and Black River United will be played tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

The venue will be Appleton Estates ground and both coaches - Clive Thompson of Black River and Orlando Campbell of Holland - are confident.

In the first-leg final played at the St. Elizabeth Technical Sports complex in Santa Cruz two Sundays ago, Sadic Spencer gave the mid-season champions Holland a 1-0 advantage. However, Thompson is confident that they can overcome the 1-0 margin.

"We are hoping to erase the slim deficit and take the championship," said Thompson.

Campbell, on the other hand, maintained his argument from the first leg.

"We were quite comfortable with the 1-0 win but come Sunday, our key striker, Edroy Barrett, who got a one-match suspension, will be back and he will finish the work for us," Campbell said.

The winners of this year's competition will walk away with $121,000 along with the Wray and Nephew Trophy while the runners-up will take home $80,000.

Prep school quarter-finals

Quarter-final action in the Port Authority Prep schools cricket competition bowls off on Monday with four matches. Sts. Peter & Paul take on Quest at Mico and Hydel tackle Wolmer's at Nelson Oval, both these matches at 10:00 a.m. At 1:30 p.m., Lannamans take on St. Catherine at Mico and Meadowbrook play Ardenne at Nelson Oval.

The winners will face-off in the semi-finals on Tuesday at Nelson Oval at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Thursday is the championship and presentation day at Mico.

Meanwhile, as the preliminary stage of the Port Authority Prep Schools cricket competition ended on Thursday, Trafalgar put Vaz out of the quarter-finals, beating them by 20 runs.

Scores; Trafalgar 97-6 (25 overs); Vaz 77-6. This defeat for Vaz enabled Wolmer's to finish second in Group C.

Top four clash in Manchester

Today is first-leg action in the Alpart Manchester Football Association South League.

Zone A winners Old England face Tristars at Porus Community complex and Albion tackle Atlantica at May Day High School. Both matches will be played at 3:30 p.m.

Old England topped Zone A with 17 points ahead of Albion (12) while Atlantica came out on top in Zone B with 14 points ahead of Tristars (12).

Meanwhile, in the Power Services North League, Comfort and Greenvale will contest the final set for June 24.

In Thursday's semi-final matches, Comfort beat Hill Stars 8-1 for a 13-2 aggregate win. Lancel Smith scored a hat-trick.

Greenvale and Young Diamond played to a 1-1 draw, but the former advanced 3-2 on aggregate.

Tivoli, Random face off in final

A new champions will be crowned when Newcomers Random Strikers and Tivoli Strikers face off in tomorrow's final of the Oswest Senior Smith-sponsored Lime Hall community corner league knockout.

In the final set for Lime Hall Oval at 2:00 p.m., Tivoli will start hot favourites, but Random with Jason Gordon, goalkeeper Donovan Hinds, Roger Knight, Jamaul Studdart and André Gordon, all of whom parade their skills in the St. Ann Major League, could prove difficult to overcome.

On the other hand, Jason Johnson, Clayon Martin, Fabian Taylor, Carl Nelson, Romain Wallaston and Marvin Parkes should have other ideas for Tivoli.

In the semi-finals played last Sunday, Random defeated Lumsden United 3-1 on penalties, this after a 1-1 full and extra time draw.

In the day's other semi-final, Tivoli downed Higgin Town Strikers 3-2, also on penalties.
