West Indies struggling to avoid defeat
published: Tuesday | June 19, 2007

West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards (left) is hugged by Shivnarine Chanderpaul as teammates Daren Ganga (second right), Marlon Samuels (right) and Chris Gayle (centre) join the celebration of Andrew Strauss' dismissal, caught behind by wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, on the penultimate day of the fourth and final cricket test Match at the Riverside ground at Chester-Le-Street yesterday. Edwards took five for 112 - Dellmar

CHESTER-LE-STREET, England (CMC):

West Indies lost three wickets, two to Matthew Hoggard, after Paul Collingwood hit his fifth Test hundred to put England back in control of the rain-affected fourth and final Test yesterday.

West Indies, trailing by 113 runs on first innings, were 83 for three with Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle, their two most experienced batsmen, at the crease, when bad light stopped play early on the penultimate day of the match at the Riverside.

An annoying habit of the West Indies came back to bite them and this allowed Collingwood the luxury of scoring his second hundred of the series - a purposeful 128 - that helped England to post 400, replying to West Indies first innings total of 287.

Successful

Fidel Edwards was the most successful West Indies bowler with five wickets for 112 runs from 23 overs.

Hoggard then swung into action, when Devon Smith played across a delivery that moved back sharply to be adjudged lbw for a duck and the struggles of West Indies captain Daren Ganga continued when he was caught behind for six driving loosely at a ball moving away.

West Indies slumped to 38 for three, when Runako Morton under-edged a cut at Monty Panesar and was bowled for seven bringing Chanderpaul, a century-maker in each of his last two innings, to join Gayle.
