DERBY, England (CMC):

Derbyshire capitalised on a scrappy effort by the West Indies to win their Twenty/20 tour match by 51 runs at County Ground yesterday.

Choosing to bat after their Australian captain Simon Katich won the toss, Derbyshire compiled 135 for six off their 20 overs and then reduced the touring side to a flimsy 84 all out in 15.4 overs.

Seamer Tom Lungley and left-arm spinner Ant Botha combined for eight wickets to wreck the West Indies innings after the Caribbean bowlers had done a fair job in keeping the home team's total below the 150-mark.

Katich had top-scored in Derbyshire's innings with 31 off 28 balls with two boundaries.

Chris Taylor (28 not out) and Mick Dighton (27) were the next best contributors for Derbyshire.

Chris Gayle, in his first series as West Indies captain, picked up two wickets for 15 runs off two overs, while medium pacers Ravi Rampaul (1-21) and Darren Sammy (1-25) shared two wickets to underline their return to fitness after groin and hamstring injuries, respectively. Marlon Samuels (1-22) was he other wicket-taker.

In the woeful run-chase, newcomer Austin Richards did best and was one of only three West Indies batsmen to reach double figures.

Gayle was first to go, bowled by Lungley for four and the six-foot 27-year-old trapped Samuels, the very next ball, for a duck.

Lendl Simmons scored only three but the Antiguan Richards showed resistance in carving out a top-score of 25.

The 23-year-old left-hander thumped three fours and a six in his innings that last 33 balls.

Dwayne Bravo, with a run-a-ball 12, and Dwayne Smith, with 13 off 15 balls, got promising starts but failed to transform their knocks into match-winning innings and West Indies plunged from 67 for four to their final total, losing their last six wickets for a mere 17 runs.

Lungley finished with four for 11 off 2.4 overs and Botha bagged four for 14 off four overs. Ahead of their two-match Twenty/20 series against England, on Thursday and Friday, West Indies will play their last Twenty/20 warm-up match against a PCA Masters XI tomorrow.
