Henry cops sprint double
published: Monday | June 25, 2007

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

Samantha Henry completed the Under-20 sprint double on yesterday's final day of the three-day National Senior and Junior Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

Henry, who took the 100m in a personal best of 11.21 seconds on Saturday night, returned last night to win the 200m in an impressive 22.94 ahead of Schillonie Calvert (23.42).

Ramone McKenzie was also impressive in taking the boys Under-20 200m in 20.63 seconds ahead of Triston Taylor ( 21.39).

McKenzie had mixed feelings about his win.

"I just went out there, followed my coach's instructions and came home with the victory.

"It was kind of difficult at the start because I could not go around the corner fast enough," he indicated, while pointing to his hamstring injury.

Tables turned

In the boys Under-18 200m, Nickel Ashmeade of St. Jago turned the tables on 100m winner Dexter Lee of Herbert Morrison. Ashmeade, who finished second in the 100m in 10.39, took the 200m in 20.82 seconds ahead of Lee (21.26).

Lee had won the 100m in a personal best 10.33 on Saturday night.

In the Under-18 girls 200m, Yanique Ellington of Holmwood won in 24.51 ahead of Leslie-Ann Mitchell of Manchester High ( 24.66).

In the 100m Under-18, also from Saturday, Jura Levy won the girls section in 11.64, a personal best, while World Junior 100m bronze medallist Carrie Russell finished fourth in 11.92.

In the field events, the University of Technology's (UTech) Raymond Brown threw 18.57m to break the junior shot put record. The previous mark was 18.40m.

In the hurdles, Shermaine Williams of Alpha won the Under-18 100m event in 13.53 seconds, while Kimberly Laing took the Under-20 event in 13.67.
