The Editor, Sir:Rights and or privileges need to be defined as they pertain to the article 'Who has the handle? - genders at odds over rights' published on June 28.
Both Faith Webster and Lanny Davidson have taken us down a not-so-clear path regarding the rights of Jamaican citizens. Are there gender-specific laws which could be deemed as unequal distribution of rights?
Where it concerns changing roles, both parties in charge of guiding and protecting the 'rights' of these groups really need to highlight the groups' improvement relative to each other. Women could not have advanced to their new- found positions in all areas without the assistance of men, whose ability to have promoted women was made possible by the women who got them where they are.
The discussions when subjective, raise the issues of the privileges men have, being geared and fashioned to please the palate of the women they are to serve socially. Etiquette and chivalry cater to the comfort of the fairer sex, and so a lot of what we do really complements each other.
Let's focus on 'engendering' an attitude where each group aims on advancing the other. Together, each achieves more.
