Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) urges cops to get on voters' list
published: Wednesday | July 4, 2007

Petrina Francis, Staff Reporter

Walker

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) yesterday made an appeal for police personnel who are registered to vote to get on the police voters' list by July 6.

This list will allow members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force to vote on the day designated for police and the military.

While civilians vote in the area in which they live, police and military personnel vote in the area where they work. This is usually done days before the general election.

In a newspaper advertisement yesterday, the EOJ said it has already conducted an islandwide enumeration drive at all police stations and will not be carrying out this exercise again.

Several movements

However, Danville Walker, director of elections, said there have been several movements within the police force since the police voters' list was compiled earlier this year.

"So we need time for any last minute changes," he said.

According to Mr. Walker, police and military voting has been confusing in the past and his office is aiming to have as smooth a voting day as possible.

He said some policemen and women are on the civilian voters' list and turn up on the day designated for the security forces to vote.

As such, he is urging those police who did not participate in the all-island enumeration drive at police stations to visit any EOJ constituency office and let the office know where they are now stationed. Police personnel are required to take their voter identification card with them to the EOJ offices.
