GSB Credit Union is no spring chicken

Sixty-one years ago, Government Savings Bank (GSB) Co-operative Credit Union hatched, and, by now ,it's no spring chicken, but it still has the flavour.

The members of the credit union celebrated this milestone last Sunday starting with a church service and then a family brunch at the Hilton Kingston hotel.

But this wasn't your typical brunch. It was called a fancy hat and tie affair, and while the few neckties were pretty nice, it was all about the chic hats on show. Others just came as they were, taking it like the old adage, 'easy like Sunday morning'.

Whoops and loud applause for fashion

The fashion show elicited a few whoops and loud applause from the gathering, as the women showed off fine pieces fit for any wardrobe. Brunch had some of the usual favourites, including ackeeand saltfish, plantains, fish with baked chicken and some hearty fruits as well.

General manager Garret D'Aguilar pledged to continue the entity's strident service to members and transforming lives and communities. He admitted the credit union was going through a transformation but the focus remained on the members. He outlined the company's plans to expand capacity and to provide greater affordability to members.

But there wasn't just talk and presentations; this brunch had some fine entertainment. The Dance Xpressions duo of Orville Hall and Shelly-Ann Malcolm brought some heat to proceedings with their energetic number with an encore. Gary Felix crooned a couple Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues and Angels, plus the Impulse band kept guests entertained throughout with their mixture of jazz, reggae and R&B instrumentals.
