NOTE-WORTHY: Election date disruptive
published: Tuesday | July 10, 2007

Election date disruptive

I refuse to believe that our Prime Minister, Mrs. Portia Simpson Miller would call the election on August 27. This is a total disrespect to the education system. This is the time of the year that children go out to get registered, the Students' Loan Bureau is overpacked and parents are busy putting on the final touches for back-to-school activities.

Also, in view of the fact that after every election there are legal battles, recounts and all sort of rigmarole that go on for weeks, and at which party supporters are always present, I think the date is too near the reopening of school.

Mrs. Simpson Miller should fire her advisers or whomever made the decision. I do hope there are no plans to delay the start of the school year to facilitate election proceedings.

Improperly installed CCTV

Closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, placed in city centres, need not be damaged if installed properly.Usually, cameras are positioned in such a way as to cover each other.

The cameras that were stolen were improperly installed and as such the contractors should have to pay for the loss. Cameras should never be placed on wooden poles in the first place. All cameras must be covered by another camera, it simply means you never install one camera.

Good boost from surfers

Congratulations to the Jamaica Surfing Association and the Caribbean Surfing Association on the successful staging of their surfing championships in Yallahs,St. Thomas, last weekend.

The weekend saw large crowds turning out to enjoy a most unfamiliar sport or in a number of cases to just mix and mingle. This event not only served to market Jamaica but also to put Yallahs and St. Thomas and the potential that lies therein on the forefront for a weekend.

I hope this is a start for other such events.

Take serious look at casinos

This letter is a reply to Mark Titus' story of July 8. There is no doubt casino gambling attracts unsavoury characters. It just so happens casino gambling is a labour intensive operation, typically requiring very large numbers of employees. In a country where unemployment is a very serious drag on the economy, we cannot afford not to take a very serious look at how casino gambling can help us in this area.
