NOVLENE WILLIAMS and Kenia Sinclair were impressive winners but Veronica Campbell and Usain Bolt were upstaged by Americans in cold conditions at Lausanne's Athletissima Super Grand Prix meeting last night.

Williams, the national champion, won the women's 400 metres in 50.71 seconds ahead 2001 world champion Amy Mbacke Thiam of Senegal, 51.03. Jamaica's Shericka Williams took fourth in 51.49 and Shereefa Lloyd fifth in 51.70.

National 800m record holder Sinclair outstayed a crack field, including many-time world champion Maria Mutola of Mozambique, to capture the two-lap event. Sinclair got to the line in 1:59.13, just ahead of American Hazel Clarke (1:59.43) and Mutola (1:59.66).

Campbell, the fastest woman over 100m this year, could not reproduce the form which took her to a world-leading 10.89 at the National Championships and was clipped by 2003 world champion Torri Edwards. Edwards won in 11.00 just ahead of Campbell's 11.07.

Bolt was blown away by Tyrone Gay in the 200m. The man rated as the best 100m/200m sprinter in the world ran away from the field to win by a wide margin clocking 19.78, the fourth fastest time this year. Bolt was second in 20.11 and Gay's compatriot, Wallace Spearmon, was third in 20.42.

Asafa Powell gave a hint that he is returning to his best when he anchored a Jamaican quartet to a good victory in the invitational sprint relay, clocking 38.75. Great Britain were just behind in 38.78 while the Netherlands took third in 39.37.

Ennis-london fourth

National 400m hurdles champion Melaine Walker was runner-up in 54.90 to Russia's Natalya Ivanov, who won the event in 54.90. American Michelle Perry again dominated her rivals in the sprint hurdles, crossing the line in 12.60 ahead of Sweden's Susanna Kallur, 12.62, and fellow American Lolo Jones, 12.74. Jamaica's Delloreen Ennis-London was fourth in 12.75.

Jamaica's trio of Nesta Carter (10.17), Michael Frater (10.20) and Steve Mullings (10.20) finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively, in the men's 100m which was run in two sections. Bahamas national record holder and the find of the season, Derrick Atkins, won in 10.04.

Another national champion, Sanjay Ayre, was third in the men's 400m in 45.79 behind winner, Gary Kikaya of the Democratic Republic of Congo, 45.24. Australia's Commonwealth Games champion John Steffensen was second in 45.54. National record holder James Beckford was down for the long jump but did not start. Panama's Irving Saladino won with a best leap of 8.36m.
