Dwayne Smith ... claimed four wickets for eight runs against the Dutch. - File DUBLIN, Ireland (CMC):
GOOD TIMES continued to roll for the West Indies when they wasted no time and crushed the Netherlands by 10 wickets under the weight of stifling bowling and punishing batting in the opening match of the Irish quadrangular one-day international series yesterday.
Chasing a modest target of 81 from their allocation of 50 overs, the West Indies hit the jackpot in the 15th over when left-handed opener Devon Smith worked a delivery from Billy Stelling off his hip for four to the deep fine leg boundary. The West Indies earned a bonus point for a high rate of scoring when captain Chris Gayle led the way with an unbeaten51 from 45 balls and Smith scored 29 not out from 42 balls to hasten the end before the approaching clouds did any damage.
Dwayne Smith had captured four wickets for eight runs from six overs to be the pick of the West Indies' bowlers, as the Netherlands, choosing to bat, were dismissed for 80 in 31.2 overs at the Clontarf Cricket Club.
Darren Sammy collected two for two from 3.2 overs and Ravi Rampaul two for 18 from seven overs, as only three of the Dutch batsmen managed to reached double figures - Alex Kervezee top scored with 22 and Bas Zuiderent and Eric Szwarczynski both scored 10.
Breakthrough
Daren Powell suffered when Kervezee struck the first ball of the match for a boundary but Rampaul made the breakthrough in the fourth over when he had Tim de Grooth adjudged lbw for four.
The Dutch laboured to 34 for one in the 11th over before Rampaul struck again when he also had Zuiderent adjudged lbw.
Kervezee followed in the 17th over, when he edged a delivery from Powell and he became the first of five catches behind the stumps for Denesh Ramdin.
The Netherlands reached 67 for four, but they lost their last six wickets for 13 runs in less than 10 overs.
The West Indies face Scotland in their second match of the competition tomorrow at the same venue.
The Netherlands have a chance to put up a better showing when they take on the hosts today at Stormont.
