Jamaican schoolgirl pleads guilty to acid attack
published: Saturday | July 14, 2007

A Jamaican schoolgirl who threw a corrosive substance on five young children and two adults in May this year has pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

Justice Patrick Brooks remanded the 16-year-old girl for sentencing on July 31. The judge also ordered a social enquiry report for the girl.

She was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent but she pleaded guilty to the lesser offence when she appeared in the Home Circuit Court.

The incident took place at Torrington Park in Kingston.

Baby severly burned

A 14-month-old baby girl who was in the arms of her mother at the time of the acid attack received severe burns all over her body.

The facts of the case as outlined by prosecutor Sasha Smith are that on May 4 this year one of the adult complainants went to speak to the accused about certain comments she had made about her daughter.

A fight ensued and residents in the area parted them. About 10 minutes later the accused went to the complainants' house and threw a corrosive substance on them.

Attorney-at-law Charles Williams, who is representing the accused, said she was stabbed during the fight.
