Jamaica, T&T in WI Blind cricket opener
published: Saturday | July 14, 2007

With Guyana and the Windward Islands absent, only three teams will contest the West Indies Blind Regional one-day cricket tournament, with defending champions Jamaica opposing Trinidad and Tobago at Melbourne Oval this morning starting at 9:30.

Jamaica were originally scheduled to play the Windward Islands today at Melbourne and Barbados vs Trinidad & Tobago at Up Park Camp.

However, the fixtures had to be revised after Guyana and the Windwards failed to show due to transportation problems.

According to Jamaica Cricket Association executive Brian Breese, it will now be a triangular tournament with each team playing the other twice. Barbados are scheduled to play Trinidad & Tobago tomorrow at Melbourne Oval.

Strong team

Jamaica have named a strong 14-man squad to defend their title. The squad, captained by Toussaint Gardenner, reads: Orrel Richards, Damion Rose, Ripton Dean, Jason Ricketts, Damion McLean (totally blind); Damian Simpson, Dwayne Campbell, Deloris Smith and Canneel Graham (partially blind) and skipper Toussaint Gardenner, Dennal Shim, Iroy Johnson, Loshane Myles and Darrel Chambers (partially sighted). Reserves are Shavain Daley (totally blind) and Rushane Blake (partially blind). Head coach is Vivalyn Latty-Scott, assistant coach David Robertson with Heather Francis, manager.

The competition is scheduled to end on Saturday, July 21, with the playing of the final at Melbourne Oval.
