  • Hi-Pro Family Polo

    The annual Hi-Pro/ICWI Family low-goal polo tournament kicks off on Tuesday, July 17, with the quarter finals at the St. Ann Polo Club, Drax Hall, starting at 3:30 p.m.

    Seven families will be vying for top honours in the low-goal section of the competition. They are the Chins, the Lalors, the Wates, The Laings, the Melvilles, the Fong-Yees and the Vernons. The high-goal section will commence on the following week with four teams - the Lalors, Chins, Wates and Vernons.

    Both competitions were rained out last year.

    The semi-final of the low-goal competition is scheduled for next Thursday at Drax Hall and the final on Saturday, July 21, at the same venue.

  • West Portland 20/20

    The second round of the West Portland Community cricket competition takes place tomorrow with all 16 teams in action.

    The Zone One matches are Shirley Castle vs Oneaissance at Swift River, Strickers vs St. George's at Charles Town, Bangor Ridge vs Swift River at Swift River, and Black Hill vs Masters at Charles Town. Zone Two: Bybrook vs West Port at Chepstowe, Balcarres vs Rock Hall at Skibo Oval, Kensington vs Spring High at Chepstowe and Sunshine Sports Club vs Orange Bay at Skibo Oval.

  • Henry advances

    Reigning champion Nehemiah 'Fatta' Henry advanced to the quarter-finals of the Jamaica Electrical Technologies (JET) open singles skittles competition last Sunday at the Mystix Sports at Hagley Park Road.

    Henry, who represents Eastern All-Stars, outclassed Anthony Barrett of Rowe's Strikers, taking the best-of-three matches 2-0.Also advancing were Henry's clubmate, Fitzroy 'Paul' Blair, who upset last year's beaten finalists and club member Keith Barrett in a match which went four games to decide the winner after one game was tied. Henry will meet Blair in the quarter-finals.

    Other players advancing on Sunday were Cherry's Strikers' Basil Kelly, Lawrence Richards (Galaxy), Rowe's Strikers Winston Lyew, Dragon's Seymour Bennett, Uriah Gowie and Rowe's Strikers' Alfred Rowe who clipped lone female player Karlene Wright from Waltham 2-1. The winner will pocket $50,000 and the JET Trophy.

  • Dolphin Cove Football League

    Spain United became sole leaders of Group B in the Dolphin Cove-sponsored Lime Hall Community Corner league football competition when they clipped the improving Clamstead All-Stars 1-0 before a large crowd at the Lime Hall Oval last Sunday.

    The all-important goal was scored by Miguel Hinds in a melee. In the second match, Independence City came from behind to hold KO champions Random Strikers to an exiting 1-1 draw. Hartland Bambury handed Random Strikers the lead in the 18th minute but this was cancelled out by City's Shyana Evans in the 39th minute in a match which brought out the best in both goalkeepers, Gary 'Banana Man' Robinson of Independence City and Rodney Hamilton of Random Strikers.

    Higgin Town whipped Construction 4-1, thanks to a brace from the league's leading scorer, Javar Stoddart.Meanwhile, in the feature match of the Under-17 league, Famos defeated Independence City 3-1 with goals from Henry Poyser, Adrian Barkett and Ojay Gayle.Action in the Senior League continues tomorrow with a tripleheader at the Lime Hall Oval starting at noon.

  • St Ann Division One

    Relegated Eastern Confederation Super League and Captain's Bakery Major League team Syndicate F.C. of Steer Town topped the preliminary round of the ICWI-sponsored St. Ann Football Association Division One league, following their 2-0 win over Pioneer in their match at Drax Hall on Tuesday.

    In others matches, Pioneer beat Rio Hoe 4-1, last year's Division One league champions Seville United F.C. clipped Runaway Bay Strikers 1-0, Pioneer and Falklands drew 1-1 and Sevill of Priory beat Hoe of Moneague 2-0.

  • Burrell increases sponsorship in St Ann

    Captain Horace Burrell has announced increased sponsorship for the upcoming Captain's Bakery St. Ann Football Association 2007 Major League - the sponsorship moving from $1.46 million to $1.6 million.This was disclosed by the former president of the JFF while delivering the main address at the 2006/2007 presentation awards ceremony held at the Couples San Souci Hotel in Ocho Rios last Saturday night.

    Burrell also announced an additional $100,000 for the upkeep of the St. Ann FA office at Drax Hall. He commended St. Ann FA president Danny Beckford for doing a wonderful job and called on the parish executive to give him its fullest support.

    Burrell congratulated Rising Stars for winning the league and predicted they will make it to the Eastern Confederation Super League. The Fair Play Award and $10,000 went to Golden Kickers of Golden Grove and the MVP award of $5,000 to Dwayne Meredith of mid-season champions OchoRios F.C. The Island Dairies KO Trophy and $50,000 went to St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite.

  • Racing Fraternity League

    The 2007 CTL/McKay Security-sponsored Racing Fraternity football league gets underway on Sunday, July 22 at Ironside playing field in Gregory Park, close to the Caymanas Park racetrack. The opening ceremony at 3:00 p.m. will precede the first match.

    Twelve teams will contest both the league and KO competitions.They are CTL, Owners, Trainers, Jockeys, Grooms, Agents, Blacksmiths, Exercise Riders, Landscaping, JRC/BGL&C, Racing Link and Security.

    The teams will be divided into two zones following the draw at a general meeting next Tuesday morning in the trainers' room at Caymanas Park, starting at 10:30. Each team is requested to send two representatives to the meeting.

    Both competitions will run concurrently for the next two months and matches will be of 40-minute duration. There will be a semi-final and final in the league towards the end of September.

  • Wray & Nephew skittles

    A new champion will be crowned in this year's Wray & Nephew skittles competition as three of the fancied teams, including defending champions Eastern All-Stars, were knocked out in the quarter-final round last Sunday.

    Dragon from Rollington Town came from behind to pip Eastern All-Stars 6-5 in their 'Battle of the East' clash at Chelsea Avenue.Dragon will now face Meadowvale who clipped Galaxy 6-5 last Sunday to advance to tomorrow's semis at Mystix Sports Bar, 78 3/4 Hagley Park Road.

    In the other semi-final, Rowe's Strikers will oppose House of Peace at the same venue tomorrow. Rowe's defeated former champions Cherry's Strikers 6-3 last Sunday at Eastern Skittles Club, 113 Windward Road. And House of Peace pulled off the upset of the season, whipping high-riding Mystix 6-0 also at Eastern.

    The semi-final winners will meet in the final on Sunday, July 22 at Bejon's Sports Bar, Hughenden Plaza. The winner will receive $80,000 and Wray & Nephew Championship Trophy.
