LETTER OF THE DAY - A life wasted for want of $500
The Editor, Sir: The name Shawn Anthony Fletcher means nothing to many Jamaicans, but to me, his family, other relatives and friends, it means a lot. Shawn was a 22-year-old young man whom I met about 10 years ago, when he was 12. He came into my class a quiet and reserved student with impeccable manners.
Government disservice
The Editor, Sir: I have followed with concern the developing conditions among the citizens of your country. How have they been served by the Government? Declining living standards, crime and violence out of control, chronic unemployment - what is the future for the coming generation in these conditions?
Bad job of reporting
The Editor, Sir: ... I am constrained to comment that your front-page report of the Editors' Forum of July 11, of the collective views of the profession, issuggestive of a departure from that principle.
A general lack of professionalism
The Editor, Sir: Not wanting to stir the proverbial hornets' nest or undermine the integrity of the CXC organisation, I cannot help, however, as a Jamaican but notice, if nobody else has, that the CXC headquarters resides in Barbados and that the that the students of that island seem to score higher in the CAPE exams than anybody else, every year.
