ST JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC):Antigua and Barbuda's first-ever woman Governor-General was sworn into office Tuesday despite a boycott by opposition legislators protesting the appointment on the grounds that the new head of state is too political.
But Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has defended the appointment of former magistrate Louise Lake-Tack, who replaced Sir James Carlisle, who has retired after 13 years in office.
"Antigua and Barbuda is indeed fortunate that there are individuals of such distinction and integrity who are prepared to accept the role of Governor-General and carry out its duties and responsibilities," Spencer said of the new head of state who turns 63 next week.
"Antigua and Barbuda therefore looks to Her Excellency Mrs. Louise Lake-Tack to bea uniting figure, a unifying figure, playing a role in important national events, celebrating Antiguans and Barbudans' achievements and service, and undertaking a broad programme in the community. We are confident that Her Excellency will rise to the challenge," he added.
