Bruce Golding and Portia Simpson Miller during the state opening of Parliament earlier this year. - File Today, we continue our feature where we get the views of an uncommitted voter on statements made bypoliticians and other public figures during the current election campaign.
TOPIC: Recent breaches of the Political Code of Conduct ahead of the August 27 elections, most notably violence perpetrated by political supporters.
VIEWPOINT: Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and Opposition Leader Bruce Golding, in a joint statement through Political Ombudsman Bishop Herro Blair, condemned the acts of violence.
"As Prime Minister and president of the People's National Party, and the Leader of the Opposition and the Jamaica Labour Party, we state emphatically that we condemn any act of provocation, intimidation, or political violence that has already smeared the campaign. We want no further politically connected injury, loss of life or loss of property." (Quote from The Gleaner, Tuesday, July 17)
HOW the UNCOMMITTED VOTER INTERPRETS: "We, the leaders of the PNP and JLP parties, officially declare that we do not support political violence in any form we realise that even our saying so outright will not change the mindset and intentions of our most militant supporters. The trend for violence within politics has been engendered and nurtured over a number of years ... a statement made in just a moment, even by us who are influential in our respective parties, will only go so far to alleviate this problem, though it will perhaps resonate in the minds of our followers."
