Catherine Hall stun Sav Hawks
published: Thursday | July 19, 2007

WESTERN BUREAU:

CATHERINE HALL All Stars captured the 2007 Western Basketball Association/Lucozade Sports Division One Men's League title on Sunday night when they defeated defending champions Sav Hawks 68-59 to complete a 2-0 sweep in their best-of-three finals at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts.

The All Stars team, which returned to Division One at the start of the season after spending a year in Division Two, won Saturday night's Game One 67-57, which set the stage for Sunday night's second game which saw them lift the coveted title.

"It is all about peaking at the right time and playing as a unit," said the All Star's top player Goyan Malcolm who walked away with the Most Valuable Player of the final trophy. "Although we started off slowly at the start of the season, we all believe we were good enough to win the title," he said.

In Saturday night's Game One, All Stars won three of the four quarters 16-11, 21-9 and 21-18 while losing the other 9-19. Malcolm, with 23 points and 10 rebounds, Neville Christie, 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Jermaine Dillon with 11 points, all gave dominant performances for All Stars.

Dillon Hodges was the best of the Hawks players, scoring 19 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Kenneth Blackwood was next best, getting 10 points and six rebounds as All Stars romped to their 67-57 win.

In Sunday night's Game Two, it was a ding-dong battle as Hawks made a bold attempt to level the series. However, after winning the first quarter 26-16, they buckled badly and lost the other three 14-12, 23-13 and 15-8.

In yet another brilliant performance, Malcolm was again the outstanding player for All Stars, leading all scorers with a game-high 32 points. Christie and Dillon were the next best, getting 16 and 14 points.

The Hawks' unsuccessful bid to derail All Stars was spearheaded by Blackwood who got 18 points.
