Kory celebrates on the Southcoast
published: Sunday | July 22, 2007

Janet Silvera, Senior Gleaner Writer

The man of the moment Kory South is all smiles with his mom Rebecca Morrison, from England.

WESTERN BUREAU:

Last Saturday, 39-year-old Kory South imported the strings, percussion and tenor saxophones that came with the talented Kingston-based ‘Alphasonics’ band.

Accompanied by an effervescent Janet Jones, the band scorched the already-hot Treasure Beach with their musical explosion of the island’s folk songs, including Hol’ ’im Joe, Rucumbine, Day O and Liza.

With the ocean as the backdrop and the waves providing unusually beautiful musical accompaniment, the Alphasonics delivered a memorable trip down memory lane showing immense versatility in the process.

Drawing from an extensive compilation of some of the greatest hits, master hornsmen Jeffrey Brown and Craige Henry created sweet music with Bob Marley’s No Woman No Cry, taking guests from the ska era to the reggae.

The night belonged to Kory South, his wife Janet and children Kyle and Korianne, who all played hosts to the intimate gathering that converged at their Sunset Resort property.

Tribute to mom

Treasure Beach hotelier Kory (left) and his wife Janet cut his 39th birthday cake at his party last Saturday night. His children Kyle (left) and Korianne (hidden centre), along with Pearl Barrett (partly hidden), share in the occasion.

At 39, the Idaho-born hotelier who has been coming to Jamaica since age five paid tribute to his deceased mother with the song Hero. “She always spoke of the property as a ‘piece of heaven’,” he reminisced, shortly after cutting his birthday cake with his family.

Sharing in the celebration were Jake’s Jason Henzell, Ron and Modesta Baker, IVA Communication’s Lewis Buchannan and Gary Berridge, Pearl Barrett, Brian and Ethlyn Parchment, Sade Khan, John Bond, Rhonda Bennett and several others.
