Solid start for Jamaica
published: Wednesday | July 25, 2007

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (CMC):

Jamaica's batsmen took full advantage of a placid batting track at the Cayon Sports Complex yesterday, to hold the advantage against Trinidad and Tobago on the opening day of the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge.

Though no batsman managed a half-century, they posted 270 for nine to end the day with a solid total, after they won the toss and opted to bat.

Shacoya Thomas top-scored for Jamaica with 46, while there were significant contributions from Christie Jones 43, Jamie Merchant 40 not out and Horace Miller, 35.

Left-arm spinner Vishan Ramroop was the leading bowler for T&T with four for 82 and was well supported by Varoon Samaroo with two for 47. Jervon Charles chipped in with two for 66.

Openers Jones and Miller found no problems against the five-pronged pace and spin attack employed by skipper Adrian Barath in the morning session, posting 76 to give Jamaica a solid start.

On the stroke of lunch, Miller was brilliantly caught by Darren Bravo off Ramroop, as the Jamaicans went to the break on 83 for two.

Jamaica consolidated their position in the post-lunch period, adding a further 111 runs for the loss of three wickets and went to the tea break on 194 for five, with the right-handed Thomas on 35 not out and skipper Derval Green, 10.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and off-spinner Clive Andries exposed Leeward Islands' susceptibility to spin, as defending champions Guyana ended the opening day of their opening match in a strong position yesterday.

Permaul, who took 14 wickets from five first-class matches this season, captured six wickets for 55 runs from 22.4 overs, and Andries took four for 32 from 16 overs, as Leewards were dismissed for 151 in their first innings.

When stumps were drawn at the Conaree Sports Complex, Guyana had reached 99 for two.

BARBADOS IN CHARGE

In the other game, Barbados were 149 for two, replying to the Windward Islands first-innings total of 108 when stumps were drawn on the opening day of their opening round match at Warner Park yesterday.

Brief scores:

WINDWARD ISLANDS 108 (Joey Welcome 27, Johnson Charles 23, Lauron Francois 20; Stefan Gooding 3-23, Shamarh Brooks 2-42); BARBADOS 149 for two (Rashidi Boucher 77 not out, Roger Williams 52; Dawnley Grant 2-27).
