Powell takes three wickets on debut
published: Saturday | July 28, 2007

Powell

SOUTHAMPTON, England (CMC):

Daren Powell made a steady debut for Hampshire in the English County Championship against Sussex yesterday at the Rose Bowl.

The West Indies fast bowler snared three wickets for 46 runs from 13.3 overs, as Hampshire dismissed Sussex for 145 in their first innings on the third day of the rain-hit four-day match.

Powell had collected the scalp of Sussex captain Chris Adams, caught at slip by Hampshire captain Shane Warne, the legendary Australian leg-spinner, on the opening day of the match on Wednesday, when the visitors had slumped to 65 for six.

But Powell had to wait to add to his bounty, after the second day on Thursday was a complete washout, when he added the wickets of opener Richard Montgomerie for 46 and Luke Wright for 43.

Hampshire wobbled to 83 for three, but John Crawley's unbeaten 53 took them to 113 without further loss.
