Outsiders crash Pick-9

The Pick-9 continues to be plagued by outsiders, and this being the case, there was a carryover of $1.4 million at Caymanas Park on Saturday.

Apprentice Oral Bennett, who crashed Pick-9 bets with the 41-1 outsider SIR CHARLES on Wednesday, came back to wreak havoc on Pick-9 bets with upset wins aboard the 19-1 outsider LA RUDE in the closing race for the Drumbeat Trophy and the grey HOOKEDONJAZZ at 8-1 in the highly competitive seventh race for overnight allowance horses.

Also derailing the Pick-9 was Trevor Simpson's mount MAG-NIFICENTWARRIOR at the generous odds of 8-1 in the second race over 2000 metres for maiden three-year-olds. Here, EARTH-WINDANDFIRE and the lightly raced HAIL THE GENIUS were installed joint favourites at even money, but both were beaten by MAGNIFICENTWARRIOR, who showed his appreciation for the application of Lasix with an easy victory under top weight.

EARTHWINDANDFIRE tried to reel him in the last furlong, but failled to carry through the effort and had to settle for second. And HAIL THE GENIUS, the subject of a massive gamble, faded out of contention leaving the half-mile to finish in the ruck (eased). HAIL THE GENIUS, I understand, injured his mouth in the starting gate and this contributed to his dismal effort.

There's no stopping Oneil Mullings as 'the people's jockey' continues to churn out the winners. He booted home his fourth triple of the season on Saturday, comprising TAKE FIVE, HEZA RANKING and MISS SLOOKIE to move past apprentice Omar Walker in chase of Simpson in the jockeys' standings.

Mullings (36 wins) is now three adrift of Simpson and, providing he can cut down on the many suspensions he has incurred this season, will be a legitimate contender to win his first jockeys' title.
