The Jamaica Constabulary Force is improving
published: Saturday | August 4, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I would like to publicly commend the security forces for the work they are currently doing in violent inner-city communities.

In light of the numerous criticisms and negative attitudes towards the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), some of which are deserved, they are doing a commendable job under difficult circumstances, especially given the current tensions generated by upcoming elections.

Special congratulations goes out to the office of DCP Mark Shields, whose officers have been doing a great job taking steps to ensure the safety of residents who have been threatened by thugs in their community and convincing witnesses to crimes to come forward with information.

I had an occasion recently to witness the firm and swift actions of the security firms in stemming rising tensions in a particular community.

The care that the JCF displayed to residents that were under threat, with the superintendent for the area personally contacting the affected persons to provide comfort and arrange security, and the quick arrest of the perpetrators of the violence, has renewed my faith in the JCF.

It is clear that the crime situation can be meaningfully improved if the JCF is given the resources required and the society gives them the necessary support.

It is a poor reflection of our country when citizens can witness loved ones lose their lives and be afraid to provide assistance to the security forces, out of fear for their lives. It is, therefore, important that the JCF and the media publicise the benefits of the witness protection programme, so that those who have witnessed the murder of their family members and friends, know that they can see the perpetrators put in jail, without the danger of losing their lives.

I am, etc.,

DAMION BROWN
