Election strain
published: Saturday | August 4, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I believe that, given the momentum and high anxiety levels that preceded the announcement of the general election date, August 27 was not a very wise choice, in so far as the national interest is concerned. Because of this, the tension between PNP and JLP camps have increased significantly.

Additionally, because of the relatively long period since the date of the general election was announced and the actual date, the potential for acts of violence and intimidation between rival political factions has strengthened.

Political leaders should always strive to do what is in the best national interest, as opposed to acting in the best interest of their party. In a volatile political environment such as ours, putting the general election off for seven weeks is putting a strain on the police force and military, the Ombudsman, the tourism industry and many other critical sectors of civil society.

I am, etc.,
