T&T seeking redemption
published: Sunday | August 5, 2007

BASSETERRE, St Kitts, (CMC):

Two-time champions Trinidad & Tobago will be looking to redeem themselves while bottom-of-the-table Windward Islands will chase vital points in their crucial fourth round encounter of the TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge at Cayon today.

T&T's title hopes were handed a huge blow when they suffered a humiliating nine-wicket defeat to defending champions Guyana on Friday at the Warner Park Stadium and they will be looking to bounce back quickly from that debacle.

The Windwards, meanwhile, faltered in their quest for the first outright win of the tournament when they drew with the Leeward Islands, and will be also looking to make amends.

Narrowly missing out

For T&T, only skipper Adrian Barath (92) and his national team colleague Darren Bravo (91) performed with any distinction in the last game, narrowly missing out on centuries.

They were dismissed for a paltry 82 in their first innings and their bowlers failed to seriously trouble Guyana's batsmen as they piled up a 300-plus score.

Although the team did not have a full practice session due to a tour of the island Saturday, T&T manager Narsingh Rambaran remained optimistic of a better showing from his players.

"I am looking for an improved and a match-winning performance from the team," he said.

Rambaran hinted at some changes with the likelihood of Kjorn Ottley and Azaruddin Mohammed returning to the team at the expense of the out of form Somant Maraj and Alden Daniel.

He expressed his disappointment at the team's pathetic display against Guyana and said he had made his displeasure known to the players.

"[It was] a totally poor batting display, they played bad cricket. The players on the team are not pulling their weight with the exception of Barath (Adrian) and Bravo (Darren)," Rambaran said.

"The balance of the batsmen are not getting their act together and they are not doing what they are supposed to do. Instructions and advice are not being carried out. They are not playing for T&T."

T&T need to win their last two matches to remain in contention for championship honours.

The Windwards will be searching for their first outright win in the tournament, after losing two of their three matches so far.
